Quick answer
What you need to know
Inspect the item, understand the sale’s discount rules, choose an appropriate time, and make one clear offer you can pay and remove promptly. Bundles and later sale days may create flexibility, but there is no guaranteed 30%, 50%, or other universal discount.
Read the sale policy before making an offer
Some estate sales use a published multi-day discount schedule. Others allow offers only at certain times, exclude selected items, or keep firm prices throughout. Ask once if the rule is unclear. Staff members may be following seller-approved limits and may not have authority to change them.
Do not remove tags, hide merchandise, separate sets, or carry an item around while waiting for a lower price. Those actions interfere with other shoppers and can get you asked to leave.
Use condition and comparable sales carefully
Inspect the exact item for damage, missing parts, repairs, odors, wear, and pickup difficulty. If you mention a comparable sale, match maker, model, size, material, condition, included parts, and venue. An unsold online asking price is not proof of market value.
A useful offer explains itself in one sentence: the condition issue you observed, the group of items you will purchase, or your ability to remove a difficult piece within the required window. It should not become a speech about why the seller is wrong.
Timing and bundles can matter
At opening, the seller has had little chance to receive the asking price, so flexibility may be limited. Later in a multi-day sale, the approved schedule may change. Bundling several compatible items can make one transaction more attractive, but only if your total offer remains reasonable.
Immediate, safe removal can help with large furniture when the pickup deadline is tight. Confirm measurements and bring appropriate help before making the offer. Staff may not be able to load.
Make a clear offer and accept the answer
State the item and amount, avoid insulting language, and be ready to pay if accepted. If the answer is no, decide whether the tagged price still works for you. Repeating the same offer, surrounding staff, or arguing about the family’s circumstances is not negotiation.
